Dear Parents and Carers,

Due to a sickness bug and expected heavy snow in the Forest of Dean, we have decided that the children and staff on camp will be returning to Bristol this evening.

All children are safe and well cared for, although some have been suffering from a tummy upset. Some of these children are feeling better but are tired. Some children are still poorly and area being cared for.

We have arranged for a coach to collect the children from Parkend at 5pm, and we anticipate that the group will return to school by 6pm.

To avoid the risk of further contamination, we request that all children stay at home tomorrow.

Cathedral Choristers Visit

This afternoon Y4J was thrilled to be joined by some of the choristers from Bristol Cathedral School who will be singing with us in the cathedral on February 29th. We sang a couple of our songs to them, they sang to us and we also sang our joint song together. It was really interesting to hear about the work of a chorister and a few brave ones of us even auditioned as probationary choristers. The sound we made altogether was amazing and we look forward to practising hard and being ready for the concert at Bristol Cathedral on Wednesday February 29th at 11.15am (all invited).

Thanks to the choristers and their teachers for coming today.

Being safe in school

If you think someone is being bullied –

If you feel able to, point out to the bully what they are doing – they might not have realised they were bullying. Always tell a member of staff who will tell the Headteacher. Befriend the child who is being bullied.

LEARNING DETECTIVES VISIT TO BRISTOL MET

Last Tuesday four Learning Detectives (Rachel, Evie, Nadia and Ollie) went to Bristol Metropolon Academy where we talked about our experience as Learning Detectives. We made our own speeches and performed them to 24 teachers in the morning. Also with very short notice we did it in the afternoon to over 25 teachers from primary and secondary schools.

Ollie talked about how we became Learning Detectives, Evie talked about what a visit to a class looks like, Nadia talked about how we give feedback to the class and Rachel talked about how we are going to develop Learning Detectives.

We all did very well and we want to say thank you to Mrs. Bell, Mrs. Rollings and Mr. Condon who also took place in the presentation.

The new library will open on the 16th January and will be situated in Robinson House, which is opposite Morrisons Supermarket. I wonder how different the new library will be? St Fagans

Today Y5/6C enjoyed a trip to St Fagans National History Museum, as part of their 'Back to the future' project. Here we saw many different buildings from different periods in time. We visited an 1880's shop, a 13th century church and many other original buildings moved from various parts of Wales and re-erected to show how people lived throughout the past centuries. We were given a fantastic talk and explored an eco home/house of the future.

Yesterday we made some Tudor sweetmeats, using recipes from that period. We made Gingered Bread, using breadcrumbs from left-over bread, honey and lots of spices. Jumbles are biscuits that you twist into a knot. They have a strange taste from the caraway seeds.

A Report about A Day of Dressing Up!

First, myself and my friends Ollie, Oliver and Micah had a discussion about the Jessie May Trust, which is a charity to help sick children. We talked to our head teacher about raising money for them and when we could do it. A non-uniform day was arranged for Friday 11th November. If children wanted to dress up, they were asked to give a donation of £1.00. The money collected was given to the Jessie May Trust. All this information was added to the school newsletter.

On Friday 11th November we all dressed up. It was a fantastic day when lots of children showed off their stylish clothes. Apparently, the whole school dressed up. It was treat for our eyes to see so many different colours and fashions.

We were all very glad and thankful to all the children in our school for participating. We raised a total of £180.25. Myself, I felt very proud for organizing such a great event.

They took a detailed description of the suspect, Goldilocks, to help them know who to look for. They made some for Mr Condon, Mrs Rollings and Mr Sherwin but the porridge was too hot so they put it in the classroom to cool down. When they came back after play they saw that someone had eaten the porridge and Mr Sherwin's porridge was eaten all up!

Here is my story -

The Story of a Bite of Burger.

The canines pulled me apart and the molars squeezed me to my death! . As I was chewed I was mixed with that bubbly saliva “bluuu!!” I mumbled. “Nooo” as I went down the black pitch hole in the back. Now I will start my long… “journey!! around the warm body . I started to shiver as I saw a deep drop.

I squeaked at the very top of my voice as I was squished by the tonsils. I’m getting flushed by that bubbly saliva again. FLYING at top speed down the orange oesophagus. BANGG! Into the stomach. “Ouchhh!” I’m stuck in between that full stomach.

Hours Later :

All juicy nutrients have been taken out of me. I’m now in the small intestine it feels like I am on a ghost train it is so windy. “Weeeeee.” I’ve been going down the small intestine for three hours and it is really rough and very bumpy. It is so cramped here,pieces of me are just flying of. BANG! BANG! “Oww eee ouchh!” I wailed as I hit the side of the small intestine.

“Woohoo!” I said as I changed from the small intestine to the spacious large intestine. “Ewwww!” I cried as I was covered in slime “uhhh!” I’ve still got a while before I come out of the slimy large intestine. “Wohoo.” My old shape has gone and my new shape is a…s sausage “Uhhh” I gasped as I rolled around and around the large intestine. I felt sick but I only have a couple of minutes left.

I’ve hit the end of the large intestine. “Yey I’ve came to the end of my journeyyy!” Biong I have just hit the rectum. Boof I’m flying out like a bowling bowl going to hit the skittles so hard…

Back to the future science?

Y5/6C have continued to explore electricity in science lessons. This week the class investigated the question -which materials make good electrical conductors? They were then given the challenge of using the 'Back to the future' car to connect a circuit together. The children were inspired by a clip of the film Back to the Future when the characters needed to get power (electricity) to their car. We made our cars from a net after exploring nets in our maths work.

We went on to make different switches and pressure pads.

Time detectives

In ICT this week Y5/6C were time detectives undertaking an internet treasure hunt. The children needed to find out the answer to several history questions from 1948 to the present day. The class was great at using internet search engines to track down the solutions to questions such as:

Dear Parent/Carer,

‘Be Bright High Visibility Day’

To mark the clocks going back and the evenings getting darker, pupils are encouraged to dress up in their brightest clothing for a special BIKE IT dress up day tomorrow. There will be prizes for the best dressed pupils and best blinged bikes! Pupils need to be in the playground by 8.50am to parade. Walkers and cyclists can dress up in bright clothing.

Bikes should decorated or blinged to make them look at wacky and bright as possible. You can use cardboard, paper, tinsel, glitter, material, fake fur, lights, or yoghurt pots.

Your bike must be decorated at home
Make sure there is nothing interfering with your chain, wheels or other moving parts
Your bike must still be safe to ride

Also don’t forget the Bike Gear Sale which takes place at 3.00pm onwards in the playground.

Friday will also be a non-uniform day for the whole school to raise money for the ‘Jessie May Trust’ which is a charity which helps sick children. This has been organised by Ollie, Olly, Joel and Micah who are all in Y5. Bring in a donation of £1 to wear your own clothes.

Next Friday will also be a non-uniform day with a ‘spots’ theme in support of Children in Need. Wear spots on that day and bring in a £1 donation.

Today we met our new Bike-It officer, Ian. He helped us understand how important it is to be seen on the road, particularly now it is darker in the mornings and evenings. Next Thursday, everyone can come into school as brightly coloured as possible, to make sure you can be seen no matter how dark it is. Don't forget to bring your brightly coloured bike too. There will be a prize for the most 'visible' bike as well as the most 'visible' child.

Writing a flashback story

Y5/6C have been writing flashback stories to link with their topic 'Back to the future'. The children produced some fantastic descriptions using figurative language.

As I glared out the shiny car window, rain suddenly started to bucket down on the Merc like bullets falling from the sky. The view of the old park was then blurred by the heat of the warm luxurious car and by pattering raindrops joining together. The rain spluttered like an old grumpy man coughing from a terrible illness. "Did anything happen in the park?" Bob asked. "Yes I remember it vividly," Charlie replied wiping condensation off the window.

"It's still raining," I thought, "Why can't it stop?" We were on the M5 to Devon for our next holiday and I didn't think it would be a pleasant one, if the weather kept like this. The rain was pouring down the window like tears. I could hear it getting harder and harder on the roof. It was like being showered with bullets from above -like a war in the sky. As I glared out of my untidy bedroom window, I could see rain splashing down like giant tears. It sounded like terrible gunshots. It was dark and dull. I felt miserable and I wished it had been bright. Suddenly, I remembered the most amazing time of my life....

Walking along the smooth sandy shore, I could see the beautiful blue shining sea. The warm sand felt like comfy cushions beneath my feet. My nose was filled with the smell of the salty sea. The air was filled with happiness! The coconut trees were the giants looking after their home. It felt like a perfect location for an adventure.

Playground games old and new

Y5/6C have been having fun exploring playground games old and new as part of their 'back to the future' project. The class tried out old classics such as Conkers, In and out the dusty bluebells, leapfrog and What's the time Mr Wolf? The children also taught each other many of the games they like to play today.

They have painted themselves in the style of his work and discussed what they like about their work. The police have been in school this morning talking to Mrs Rolling's class. Don't worry, they are not in trouble! The police have come in to talk about how to be safe with fireworks. The reception children have been asking some very good questions.

SingUp Platinum Award Party

Today we celebrated receiving the Platinum SingUp Award. We were presented with our certificate and plaque by the High Sheriff of the City of Bristol. We are only the second school in the city of Bristol to get this award and the only one in the area to have completed the entire journey from no award through silver, gold and now platinum. Well done Mrs Marsh and the whole school for this amazing success in singing.

Modern day photos of Fishponds placed on to an old map

As part of their 'Back to the future' project Y5/6C have been looking at how Fishponds has changed over time. Using ICT, the children have taken photographs of places in Fishponds today and then placed them on to an old map. As well as ICT skills the task required them to carefully study maps in order to put the photos in the correct places. Can you spot our school?
