Weapons of Sound

Today I took some KS2 children to Hillfields to a music and recycling workshop.

Firstly we took part in a workshop run by Weapons of Sound; they are a fantastic band that are internationally famous! They play huge big instruments made from recycled materials e.g. gas pipes. Our children joined other local children and together we played a rhythm piece; what fun we had wacking the drums!

Afterwards the children designed an Auditory Garden ; they did this in groups with a small presentation of their ideas at the end. The ideas were wonderful; can you imagine a garden full of sounds and instruments thay you could play, with wind chimes in the trees, xylophones as stepping stones and so much more? Well our children did!

Throughout the children were a credit to the school; keen, interested and polite. Well done everyone, you were a joy to spend the afternoon with.

Yaarrr! I'm a Pirate!

In Year 2 we have been imagining ourselves as pirates and have written some great (and quite scary) descriptions. Here is an example of a description from Mrs Ford's class:
My name is pirate Isaac and I have a fierce cutlas. One swipe and you will die. My sharp hook can cut your neak muuhahaha!! My eye patch is so dark you look up to it and you think your in a pich black room. Anuther thing I have is a pointy tricorn hat. You look up to the skull and cross bones and you see the jolly roger. My pet, a one eyed parrot, is anoying becase he repeats evrthing I say. I am quite and ugly pirate to be onist. I also have a peg leg. I can't really balans on it. I cross the 7 seas now and then. I have 7 or 8 pistuls and they are relly yousful to me. My teeth are gold because I don't brush them. My crew sometimes disobay my orders and have to walk the plank! My bulats are kept on my belt. If you see me bewer!

All the fun of the fair

Today was the end of the Year 5 & 6 project - The Apprentices. In the project the children studied fairs/fairgrounds and went on to design, make and run stalls at our School Summer fair. The children have worked very hard throughout the design process. They produced prototypes before creating a final product. Mr Terry helped the children to think about budgets and maximising profits.

Following the success of the school Summer festival, another fair was put on today in the school hall. Today an additional £134 was raised.........well done Year 5/6!!

Maths frog investigation

On Friday Mrs Joseph's Maths group undertook an investigation about two families of frogs who wish to swap sides to the other side of the pond.

The rules were:

  • There are 7 lily pads which the frogs must use to cross the pond.
  • Frogs can only jump to empty lily pads.
  • Frogs can only jump over one other frog at a time.
  • Frogs don't know how to jump backwards!

The children found the investigation very tricky. To see a solution to the investigation click here to see how last years class managed it.

Y5/6 Art Attack

Here are some photos from earlier in the school year when Y5/6 undertook an Art Attack project. In the project the children explored various media and art skills.

Choices

Today we have started our new RE topic of 'choices'. We discussed choices that we make and the reasons for making them. We also talked about what makes a right and a wrong choice and how we know.
How do you know if you are making the right choice?
