Last week it was Chinese New Year, and it is now the year of the rabbit.
This is a story about this special time:
A long time ago in ancient
China, there was a monster named Nian; he woke
up once a year to damage the
villages. People had to abandon their houses and
hide as Chinese New Year's
Eve came closer.
On the day that the monster would wake up, a wise man
told the villagers to
hang red paper on their doors and let off all their
firecrackers. Before long,
the monster came to the village it became scared
of the loud noises from the
firecrackers and the red paper hurt its eyes. It
turned away never to come back
again.
