Mayan maths
Y5C have looking at the Mayan number system and undertook some Mayan maths
as part of our Mexcellent project. The Mayan mathematics system was
way ahead of its time. They used a symbol for zero, a dot to represent
one and a bar to represent 5.
We even went on to undertake some Mayan multiplication!

Playing an Aztec ball game
Y5C have been studying the Aztecs and Mayans as part of their Mexcellent project. We found out about an Aztec ball game called tlachtli. The aim of the game was to get the ball through one of the two hoops on either side of a court. The players were not allowed to hit the ball with their hands or feet. They could use only their knees, hips and elbows. The losing team were sacrificed!
In PE we decided to try this game out. The game was very difficult, especially keeping the ball up using only the knees, hips and elbows. It was great fun and thankfully no one was sacrificed for a game lost!

Today Y5C had great fun cooking and eating Mexican food. We made Mexican Salsa, Guacamole and chili in a tortilla wrap.
