The day of the dead

Y5C have been looking at the Mexican celebration - The day of the dead, as part of our Mexcellent project.

It is a three day festival during which people remember loved ones who have died. It starts on October 31st to the 2nd November (The same time as Halloween, All saints and All souls day). Day of the dead is a time of happiness not of tears and sadness.

The last day is spent at the cemetery. Families picnic on the favourite foods of those who have died. They decorate tomb stones with flowers and candles. In the evening candles are lit and prayers are said.

We looked at existing day of the dead art and found out about sugar skulls. Sugar skulls are colourful candy sweets given as gifts at the festival. We decided to decorate paper versions of these sugar skulls.
